An experimental study of nanoflagellate bacterivory Rev. Microbiol.
Fernandes,Ana Júlia; Mesquita,Hilda de Souza Lima.
Heterotrophic nanoflagellate Pseudobodo tremulans (4.8 to 7.0 µm) and heterotrophic bacteria, isolated from coastal waters in Ubatuba, SP, Brazil, were used in experiments to analyze quantitatively the relationships between bacteria and nanoflagellates. The meaning of these results for the role of heterotrophic nanoflagellates in the Ubatuba coastal ecosystem is discussed.

Assessment of the nitrification process in a culture of pacific white shrimp, using artificial substrate and bacterial inoculum in a biofloc technology system (BFT) Ciência Rural
Santos,Nathalia Brenda Veiga dos; Furtado,Plínio Schmidt; César,Dionéia Evangelista; Wasielesky Junior,Wilson.
ABSTRACT: Litopenaeus vannamei is the most cultured marine shrimp in all types of systems including the Bioflocs Technology System (BFT). Bioflocs are formed by microorganisms, among these, autotrophic bacteria are responsible for the nitrification process. This study aimed to identify and promote the development of nitrifying bacteria by adding artificial substrates and biofloc inoculum in L. vannamei culture in a BFT system. The experiment consisted of four treatments with three replics (4x3) as follows: (1) Control: clear water in which bioflocs were formed; (2) IN (10%): clear water with biofloc inoculum (10%); (3) IB: clear water with substrate (immature “bioballs”); and (4) MB: clear water with mature “bioballs” inoculum from a recirculation system....

Carbon conversion efficiency and population dynamics of a marine algae–bacteria consortium growing on simplified synthetic digestate: First step in a bioprocess coupling algal production and anaerobic digestion ArchiMer
Vasseur, Christophe; Bougaran, Gael; Garnier, Matthieu; Hamelin, Jérôme; Leboulanger, Christophe; Le Chevanton, Myriam; Mostajir, Behzad; Sialve, Bruno; Steyer, Jean-philippe; Fouilland, Eric.
Association of microalgae culture and anaerobic digestion seems a promising technology for sustainable algal biomass and biogas production. The use of digestates for sustaining the growth of microalgae reduces the costs and the environmental impacts associated with the substantial algal nutrient requirements. A natural marine algae–bacteria consortium was selected by growing on a medium containing macro nutrients (ammonia, phosphate and acetate) specific of a digestate, and was submitted to a factorial experimental design with different levels of temperature, light and pH. The microalgal consortium reached a maximum C conversion efficiency (i.e. ratio between carbon content produced and carbon supplied through light photosynthetic C conversion and acetate)...

Effect of particulate organic carbon on heterotrophic bacterial populations and nitrification efficiency in biological filters ArchiMer
Michaud, Luigi; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Bruni, V; Piedrahita, Raul.
Competition between heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria is of major practical importance in aquaculture biofilter design and operation. This competition must be understood to minimize the negative impact of heterotrophic bacteria on an aquaculture system. On the other hand, the heterotrophic population is suspected of having a positive effect against pathogenic bacteria. Little information is available on the bacterial communities present within aquaculture systems, except for nitrifying bacteria, but a combination of traditional aquacultural engineering research methods and novel microbiological techniques offers new opportunities for the study of these communities. The heterotrophic bacterial population activity and the nitrification efficiency of a...

Enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria in water for dialysis: comparison of the efficiency of Reasoner'2 agar and plate count agar BJM
Bugno,Adriana; Almodóvar,Adriana Aparecida Buzzo; Pereira,Tatiana Caldas.
Due to the fact the incubation conditions may influence the microbiological evaluation of water for dialysis, the objective of the present study was the comparison of the efficiency of R2A and PCA media in the enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria in 193 samples of water collected in dialysis clinics from 12 cities in São Paulo, between October and December 2007. Results showed counts significantly greater in R2A, suggesting that enumeration should be carried out in R2A, suggesting that enumeration should be carried out in R2A agar associated with longer incubation times, because of the greater sensitivity.

Monitoring and spatial distribution of heterotrophic bacteria and fecal coliforms in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BABT
Lutterbach,Márcia T. S.; Vazquez,Joselito Cabral; Pinet,Jorge A.; Andreata,José V.; Silva,Alexandre Carlos da.
The distribution of heterothrophic bacteria and fecal coliforms was monitored at four sampling stations located near the shore of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Water samples were collected, monthly from October 1994 through September 1998. The highest heterothrophic count (6.5x10 7 CFU/100mL) was recorded at stations 2 and 4 during August 1998 and the lowest (10 ³ CFU/100 mL) at station 3 during February 1995. With respect to fecal coliforms, the highest and lowest counts were 1.6x10 5 coliforms/100mL at station 3 during March 1997 and <1 coliform/100mL at all the stations during February 1995 and September 1997 as well as station 3 during February 1998. The data indicated a percentage increase of the...

Release of available nitrogen from river-discharged dissolved organic matter by heterotrophic bacteria associated with the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa ArchiMer
Purvina, S; Béchemin, Christian; Balode, M; Verite, Celine; Arnaud, Christophe; Maestrini, Serge Y.
The use of riverine dissolved organic matter by the heterotrophic bacteria associated with a culture of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa and release of simple nitrogen compounds were studied in an experimental series. Bacteria reduced the bulk of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) by half, but when associated with M. aeruginosa, DON was excreted and its concentration rose by 13%. During the stationary growth phase bacteria released ammonium, doubling the concentration of ammonia as well as of nitrates. Bacteria associated with M. aeruginosa consumed riverine DON and joined the ammonification and nitrification process, supplying cyanobacteria with simple nitrogen compounds.

Комплексы гетеротрофных микроорганизмов прибережного мелководья бухты Казачья (Чёрное море) IBSS Repository
Смирнова, Л. Л..
Aspergillus, Penicillium, Phoma, Mucor.

Микробиологическая характеристика прибрежных наносов региона Севастополя (Черное море) IBSS Repository
Миронов, О. Г..
